1943

Professor Leo Kanner described autism

1944

Dr. Hans Asperger outlines  the symptoms of autism. 

Asperger's syndrome is named after him. 

1952

Introduction of the first edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders DSM-1

1965

The founding of the National Society for Autistic Children, known today as The Autism Society of America. 

1973

Dr.Ole Ivar Lovaas used Intensive Behavior Intervention (ABA) for the first time.

1977

A twin study performed by Susan Folsei and Michael Rutter suggests a genetic basis for autism

1980

Infantile Autism is added to the DSM-3

1981

Introduction of the term Asperger Sydrome

1994

Asperger's Disorder was added to the DSM-IV.

2004

The Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act was passed. 

 

2013

Classification of Autistic Disorder, Asperger's Disorder, Childhood Disintegrative Disorder, and PDD-NOS into one diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder DSM-5
