Key Assessment terms & Concepts

  • Percentile:  A statistical measure that helps understand how we compare with other people within a certain comparison group.

  • Criterion Assessments: standardized assessments that measure student performance against a specific standard or criterion.

  • Standard score:  A  score that that helps clinicians compare test results of other peers from the same age-group.

  • Standard Deviation: Deviation is the difference from the standard. It is a way to measure the distance between the test score and the average score.

  • Statistical Significance: A way to determine if a result or finding in a study or experiment is meaningful and not just due to chance or randomness, instead the results are attributed to a specific cause.

  • Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM): A manual or handbook used widely by clinicians and psychiatrist to diagnose mental health disorders for adults and children.

  • Correlation: A statistical relationship between two or more variables.

  • Confidence Interval:  A way to express the uncertainty or variability associated with a sample estimate of a population parameter.

  • Neuropsychological Assessment: A comprehensive evaluation of a person's cognitive, emotional, and behavioral functioning.

  • Behavior Assessment: The systematic process of gathering information and data about an individual's behavior, emotions, and environmental factors to better analyze as well as understand their behavior patterns.

  • Z-Score: A score that identifies how far the individual is the average score. A z-score is a way to know how many standard deviations we are from the mean. If it is a positive z-core then we are above the mean, if it is negative, then we are below the mean.

  • Mean: The average number that is found by adding all data points and then dividing by the number of data points.
